The Most Instagrammable Places in Iceland

By Jessica Russo

Always jealous of your friends' cool travel photos while scrolling through social media? Well, it's your turn to make them jealous.

While just about every inch of Iceland is photogenic, there are a few specific spots begging to be captured. From mysterious black sand beaches to crystal ice caves and cute colorful cities, Iceland is an Instagrammer's heaven.

Diamond Beach

Located near Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland, this sparkling site of glistening icebergs is not one to miss. What’s so striking about Diamond Beach is the way the blue-silver ice crystals contrast with the black lava sands of the beach. After you’re all done taking photos, be on the lookout for seals and orcas!

Reykjavík

If we had to guess, Reykjavik is probably where you'll spend most of your nights in Iceland. We say this because, well, it's where most of the hotels are! Iceland's adorable capital city is filled with cute restaurants and colorful house-like storefronts. Be sure to visit Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik's iconic, architecturally amazing church. Climb up to the top for awesome views - and photo-ops.

Vatnajökull Ice Caves

Visiting Iceland sometime between November and March? Do yourself a favor and plan a guided tour through the magical Vatnajökull Ice Caves. Feel your head bobble and your eyes widen as you admire the gleaming blue crystal walls of ice. Be aware that not all ice caves are blue. Depending on location, caves can be white or even black. Do some research before you go, and be sure to dress accordingly.

Kirkjufell

This is, without a doubt, the most photographed mountain in the country. Its pyramid shape, framed by waterfalls and rocky streams, makes for an ideal photo. For a truly magical shot, try to get there at sunset!

Blue Lagoon

One of Iceland’s most popular (and literal) hotspots, The Blue Lagoon, boasts milky-blue opaque pool of mineral-rich water. Set starkly against a dark atmosphere of black lava fields and green moss, this geothermal bath is perfect for soaking and snapping.

Seydisfjordur

Everyone in Iceland knows about "The Blue Church." Follow the rainbow path that leads to this iconic and adorable landmark of colorful splendor! Seydisfjordur is a picturesque town just below Husavik in Eastern Iceland.

Lake Viti

This turquoise gem is no plain ole lake. Lake Viti is actually set in a crater within Krafla's volcanic fields! Located near Lake Myvatn, this bright blue beauty is easily accessible by a short hike. While this Insta spot doesn't take long to get to, you'll feel like you just landed on another planet.

Reyniskirkja Church, Vik

On your way to Reyniskirkja Beach, make a pit stop at this picture-perfect little church. Not only are its red and white colors striking, but their contrast against the vast landscape is breathtaking.

Northern Lights

Okay, okay... this isn't exactly a "place," but witnessing the dancing blues, greens, and purples of the Aurora Borealis is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In order to see this magical phenomenon, you'll need to visit Iceland in the winter months. Wait for a clear night, then venture out of the city to complete darkness and wait for the sky to light up with color.

Seljalandsfoss

Yes, this is "that waterfall you can stand behind!" Located in southern Iceland just off Route 1, the rushing water of Seljalandsfoss falls a steep 215 feet and empties into a sparkling pool surrounded by mossy greenery. Whether you brave the back or admire from in front, this majestic waterfall makes the perfect pic from any angle.

Reynisfjara, Vik

Set in the shadow of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Vik is a little seafront village filled with black sand beaches and otherworldly landscapes. Check out Reynisdrangar for awesome cliff shots and Reynisfjara Beach for striking shots of where black meets blue. In the area, check out Reynisfjall, a unique basalt rock formation on beachside mountains!
