Embarking on a solo journey can be a truly transformative experience, opening doors to self-discovery, newfound confidence, and unforgettable memories. For female travelers, the prospect of venturing alone may raise questions about safety and security.

However, in a world that's becoming increasingly connected and aware, there are countless destinations that prioritize the well-being of female explorers. In this guide, we present a carefully curated selection of 12 safe destinations for solo female travelers.

Oslo, Norway

Norway has boasted a long history with acceptance and inclusivity, implementing anti-discrimination laws much earlier than other European countries. Some of these laws would even go as far to include sexual orientation under their protection – something that was quite unheard of in the time it was passed (1981). Locals in Norway also face a lower gender wage gap compared to other countries around the world.

Combined with a low crime rate and the government’s commitment to safety, Norway is an excellent destination for solo-female travelers. Past visitors particularly love the city of Oslo for its natural beauty, incredible museums, and walkable streets. Oslo is also home to a few groups dedicated to women’s safety and equality, namely Oslo Women’s Rights Initiative and Norwegian Women's Lobby.

Galway, Ireland

Ireland is a country that is very well-recognized for its incredibly friendly people. Beyond that, Ireland is home to some of the loveliest natural attractions on the planet, including the Cliffs of Moher and Giant's Causeway. If these points alone don’t convince you to visit the Emerald Isle, perhaps the country’s devotion to equality will! As of 2023, Ireland is one of the most accepting countries in the world, as well as one of the safest.

You’ll find most of Ireland’s top cities to be safe and friendly to visit, but to spend time in one of Ireland’s safest destinations for solo female travelers, consider booking your stay in Galway. This major city has a superbly low crime rate, with a large population being primarily college students. Not only is Galway safe, but it's within close proximity to some of Ireland’s best attractions.

Toronto, Canada

If you find yourself choosing between Canada and the United States for your next solo-female trip, definitely look more towards Canada. While the two countries are similar in experience, Canada has far more laws preventing harassment and discrimination. Since the Pandemic, it’s even been ranked as the #1 most accepting and safest country in the Western Hemisphere for LGBTQ+ folx and women. Major cities are safe and maintained with plenty of fun things to do. Oh, and the people are exceptionally kind as well!

Toronto’s strong police presence and low crime rate make it a great destination for solo female travel. There’s also a few resources available for women who feel endangered, such as Women's Safety Line and the Toronto Police Service's Women's Safety Initiative. Trans individuals will also find Toronto’s famous gay district, Church-Wellesley Village, to be extremely welcoming. Bonus points go to Toronto for an organized public transport system, cultural diversity, and walkable distances.

Punta del Este, Uruguay

Out of all of the countries in the Americas, Uruguay is one of the safest to travel alone as someone who is female-presenting. Its distinctly welcoming locals and popularity as an urban vacation spot make it excellent for solo travelers. The added bonuses are the country’s low crime rate, acceptance, and diversity. Even better, Uruguay is the leading country in all of South America when it comes to progressivism. In terms of overall legal framework, about 90% of efforts made in Uruguay in regards to protecting women against violence has been achieved.

Punta del Este is Uruguay’s famed urban vacation spot. Bordering the Atlantic Coast, the seaside city is the perfect blend of coastal vibes and city life. From its gorgeous beaches to its contemporary nightclubs, it's no wonder why Punta del Este is such a beloved spot for tourism.

Helsinki, Finland

Finland is one of those countries where tourists are able to roam and explore as they please, while also feeling safe and welcomed. Locals are as friendly as they come, with many of them attempting to make connections or simply help out those that are visiting. Another thing that makes Finland such a breeze to travel to is the accessible and organized public transportation system. Crimes in Finland within the past decade are mostly related to pickpocketing.

Experience stunning scenery, incredible museums, and a bustling nightlife scene all in one place: Helsinki! This city is truly a tourist’s dream. You’ll get a little bit of everything Finnish, from the historical art displays to the contemporary music scene. There’s also the botanical gardens for those who want a break from all the craziness.

Reykjavik, Iceland

For almost 14 years, Iceland has topped the charts as the safest country in the world. The Nordic nation has consistently prioritized safety and inclusion which has ultimately resulted in it becoming a welcoming destination for all. Gender wage gap rates in Iceland are some of the smallest worldwide, and the country is a leading figure in LGBTQ+ rights. On top of all of that, Iceland has a relatively small population, which further adds to the friendly atmosphere.

Look no further than the country’s beautiful capital of Reykjavik to experience the safest destination for solo-female travel in Iceland. With a low crime rate, friendly demeanor, appreciation for tourism, and a civil police force, Reykjavik is your best bet for safety-conscious travel.

Mallorca, Spain

Spain has become a superbly safe and welcoming place to visit, so much so that it’s almost 5X safer compared to the United States. Spain also proves to be women-friendly, with anti-discrimination laws frequently reviewed. This is in part thanks to the rapid increase of women’s seats in National Parliaments, with nearly half of all seats (42%) occupied by women as of 2022.

Even better, in March 2023, a groundbreaking law went into effect that allows people as young as 16 to legally change their gender without a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria or undergoing a two year hormone replacement treatment.

Spain’s major cities are generally safe. However, you’ll definitely want to spend some time in Mallorca if you prefer quiet and low key destinations. Known for beach activities and parties, Mallorca is Spain’s ideal spot for relaxation.

Berne, Switzerland

New Zealand’s attitude towards women is also quite well-received, in addition to being one of the only countries in the world to ever have female leaders for more than 15 years. In June 2023, the former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, was even crowned dame of the highest honor for her efforts during her 6-year term.

By far, Wellington is New Zealand’s safest place for solo-female travel. The most common crimes are petty theft and scams. Although small, the city is abundant in exceptional views and fun things to do. Just be aware that Wellington is on a geographic fault line, meaning that the city is prone to mild earthquakes.

Bishan, Singapore

Singapore is one of Asia’s safest countries, but for different reasons than some of the other places on this list. Think of the case for New Zealand and Iceland. These two countries have laws preventing discrimination, friendly people, and a lax police force that don’t even carry firearms. Singapore, on the other hand, has a welcoming environment, but part of what makes the country so safe is how severe some punishments can be for small crimes. Violent confrontations, scams, and harassment are quite rare. Singapore’s major cities are also very well-maintained and organized.

Tourists who wish to get a little bit of everything Singaporean should definitely visit Bishan. It offers a great hybrid of natural beauty (thanks to the nearby reserve) and metropolitan lifestyle. The city is also exceptionally safe for solo–female travelers, with locals and tourists claiming to feel safe even at night.

Beyond Chile’s unique appearance, it’s also a safe place to travel by yourself.

Santiago is Chile’s must-see city. It holds the country’s most liberal mindset, as well as the most thriving LGBTQ+ scene. In addition, numerous events have been held in Santiago within the past decade to advocate for equality in the workforce and to speak out against misogyny.
