The Best Cities to Visit in Tuscany, Italy

By Kenya Barrett

Known for its extensive history, cultural influence, and scenic landscapes, Tuscany is a region that every traveler must see during their trip to Italy. Filled with great landmarks, wonderful beaches, and delicious cuisine, here are the five best cities to visit in Tuscany.

Florence

With its contributions to art, culture, and architecture, it’s no surprise that Florence is one of the best cities to visit in Tuscany. In centuries past, Florence served as the center of European commerce and is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance Era by several historians.

Today, the city has managed to preserve its historical and cultural roots – much of which can be witnessed by visiting the Historic Center. Get the history lesson of a lifetime by exploring various landmarks in the city including the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, and the Palazzo Pitti.

Pisa

The city of Pisa is iconic for being home to one of Italy’s most prolific attractions: The Leaning Tower of Pisa. However, the city is filled with tons of artistic and architectural gems. The leaning tower is actually part of a much bigger landmark – the Piazza dei Miracoli. This plaza also houses the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, and the Camposanto Monumentale.

Unbeknownst to many, Pisa is also a hub for those interested in sampling great foods. The area is lined with tons of cafes, bars, and restaurants that attract visitors on a daily basis.

Chianti Wine Region

You simply cannot visit Italy without exploring its version of “wine country.” Luckily, the Chianti Wine Region is conveniently located just south of Florence.

Named after the surrounding Chianti Mountains, the area is home to most of Tuscany’s finest wineries which drive visitors there every year. While the region is popular due to its production of wine, it is also a large producer of various agricultural products including cheese, olive oil, and grains.

Lucca

Of all the cities in Tuscany, Lucca may be the most fascinating. For this reason, we consider it to be one of the best cities to visit in Tuscany. The city boasts a number of ancient structures and has become popular due to its well-preserved walls.

This charming old town is also home to many piazzas, churches, and royal palaces. Visitors tend to spend most of their time exploring the city’s promenade, discovering what’s left of the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, or snapping pictures by the walls.

Elba

While Tuscany is known for its rolling hills and tranquil countryside, it is also home to a few serene beach towns and islands. One of which is Elba, a quaint yet beautiful gem that is part of the Tuscan Archipelago.

Located within the Tyrrhenian Sea, the city gained its popularity by initially being known as the site of Napoleon’s Bonaparte first exile. Today, travelers flock to the island to enjoy its white sand beaches, delicious food and drinks, as well as its historical landmarks. Some of which include the Fortress of Volterraio, Villa Martino, and the shipwreck of Pomonte Beach.
