The Island of Winds

One thing you’ll probably notice right off the bat in Mykonos is that the winds are pretty strong. While the winds can change depending on the time of year, Mykonos actually has strong gusts of winds all year round due to the “Meltemi Winds”. These winds blow from the north but are made stronger due to the pressure differences in neighboring countries.

The Meltemi Winds are so prevalent and strong that Mykonos is actually referred to as The Island of Winds. On another note, these winds are what help keep Mykonos cool and low in humidity.

How’s the Weather?

Speaking of humidity, Mykonos has a Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and mild winters. Following the Mediterranean climate pattern, the winters stay within the moderate range of about 45-65F and commonly has rainfall. Summers in Mykonos are generally cooler than other Greek islands thanks to the wind and low humidity.

A Name With Roots in Greek Mythology

Once upon a time in an island not so far away, there was a god by the name of Apollo who ruled over light and music. As gods do, Apollo had some offspring which eventually led to the birth of Mykonos. Being a descendant of Apollo, Mykonos was destined for greatness — which he successfully fulfilled as he was the one who hosted the great battle between Zeus and the Titans!

Mykonos is Technically a Mythological Graveyard

So, that battle between Zeus and the Titans? According to Greek mythology, Zeus annihilated the Titans and imprisoned them under the island’s terrain in a region called Choulakia. If you ever walk near that region, you’re kind of treading on the prison cells of some of the strongest beings in Greek mythology. Let’s hope your footsteps don’t awaken them…

No Crowds

The 2011 population census in Greece reported that there were around 10,000 permanent residents that inhabit Mykonos. While it may not seem like much, the island is not at all barren. Plentiful visitors come from all over the world to visit Mykonos, and it's well worth the visit!

Tons of Spiritual Sanctuaries

The primary religion in Mykonos is Greek Orthodox, with over 80% of the population identifying as a member of the church. You’ll see this reflected as numerous churches and other religious buildings adorn the island. Some of these churches are hundreds of years old which makes for some unique exploration opportunities to look at ancient architecture.

Mykonos is Home to Panagia Paraportiani

One of the most famous churches is the Panagia Paraportiani, which is actually a group of four different churches dedicated to different saints: Saint Eustathios, Saint Sozon, Saints Anargyroi, and Saint Anastasia. The church overlooks the Aegean Sea and is one of the most (if not the most) photographed churches in the world.

Mykonos is a Party Paradise

Thanks to its numerous pristine beaches, Mykonos is extremely popular for college students and spring-breakers. There are fantastic opportunities for visitors to enjoy parties, as well as lively bars and restaurants for people to enjoy.

While you can take a flight from Athens to Mykonos, probably the most common way to travel between the two islands is on a ferry. Though it may be a bit longer than a flight, it'll be extremely more rewarding as you marvel at incredible scenic views along your journey.

Mykonos has an Animal Mascot

Petros the Pelican is the island’s mascot, dubbed an honorary member of the island’s population around 1958 when Petros was found in an injured shape by a fisherman. The fisherman took Petros in, and with the help of others, restored the pelican to good health!
