Global Entry Suspended for NY Residents: What Now?

By Caitlin Hornik

The Department of Homeland Security has suspended New York residents from enrolling or re-enrolling in certain Trusted Traveler Programs. Specifically affected are the Global Entry Program, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST. Before you panic about your upcoming trip, let's go over what options are still available for NYS residents!

TSA PreCheck

We’re sure you’ve seen the signs (and noticed the shorter lines) for TSA PreCheck during your travels. For just $85 and a 10-minute, in-person appointment, you can apply for a 5-year membership which expedites you through security at airports. Arguably the best part of being a TSA PreCheck member is that you’re able to keep your shoes on and your liquids and laptop in your bag. And here’s a fun fact for you: In January 2020, 94% of those enrolled in TSA PreCheck waited less than five minutes at security. Learn more about TSA PreCheck here.

Mobile Passport Control

An authorized app created to expedite your arrival back into the United States, Mobile Passport is the first of its kind. When you turn your phone on upon landing in the U.S., you can launch the app and input the applicable information under the “New Trip” section. You’ll then receive a QR code that can be scanned by a Customs and Border Protection agent. The app is free to download and can be used at this list of airports and seaports.

CLEAR

Another program designed to accelerate you through security lines, CLEAR uses advanced technology. Specifically, your biometrics. Upon enrollment, your eyes and fingertips are used to create a code that is unique to only you. Your eyes and fingertips get matched to your code every time you check in! The best part? CLEAR is available at over 65 airports, stadiums, and venues across the country. Learn more about CLEAR here.

What Happens Now?

If you’re an existing Global Entry member, you may continue using the program at this time. However, new and re-enrollment applications are no longer being accepted for New York State residents. Despite the fact that Global Entry membership includes TSA PreCheck, membership to TSA PreCheck has not been affected by this suspension at this time.
