Panama City is known for many things, ranging from its astonishing views of Panama Bay to the treasured historic district of Casco Viejo. Combined with a welcoming vibe and sparkling atmosphere, the capital of Panama is a must-visit destination.

What makes Panama City even better? You don't have to spend a fortune in order to have an exciting vacation. Activities and food in Panama are relatively inexpensive (also using the US dollar), so crafting your own budget-friendly itinerary in Panama is quite easy. Here are 10 free things to do in Panama City!

Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo is Panama City’s treasured historic district. Built back in the 1600s, Casco Viejo, otherwise known as San Felipe, is the renewal project of Panama City after the original was almost completely destroyed by pirates in the 1500s. You’ll find some of the most intriguing architecture and preserved buildings along the narrow streets of this colonial era district. Walking through Casco Viejo also grants you access to viewing some other free things to do in Panama City, including Plaza de Francia and the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Cinta Costera

Panama City’s coastal elegance is something that can’t be found anywhere else. Head to any of the surrounding beaches in Panama City, and you’ll quickly fall in love with the seaside atmosphere. To get the best mix of urban comfort and coastal charm, head over to the beautiful waterfront promenade of Cinta Costera. Walk, bike, explore the park’s gardens, and view local artwork all while soaking in views of Panama Bay!

Mercado de Mariscos

Dive into the local culture of Panama City with a quick walk through Mercado de Mariscos (Fish Market). Here, you can see locals shop for seafood and other food items at the market’s busy stalls. You might also catch a fisherman unloading their fresh supply and preparing them to be sold. Observing the market is one of easiest free things to do in Panama City, however, buying food is also quite inexpensive as well. This is the perfect opportunity to try out handmade ceviche or other traditional dishes in Panama.

Ancon Hill

Get astonishing views of Panama from the highest point in Panama City: Ancon Hill. Formerly a United States military base, Ancon Hill was privately used to administer the Panama Canal. Now, it’s one of Panama City’s top attractions and also completely free. Hiking up and down the hill takes about 30 minutes each way, and is perfect for nature lovers.

Amador Causeway

There are four small islands along the edge of the Panama Canal known as the Causeway Islands. Each of them are connected via the Calzada de Amador (the Amador Causeway), which can be enjoyed publicly. The entirety of the route takes about 2hr 40 minutes to walk, but there are plenty of Ubers and taxis nearby, as well as bike rentals that cost less than $20/hr. Enjoy the scenic views, stop by the restaurants and shops, or get some extra cardio in during your Panama vacation.

Nueva Gorgona

Just an hour away from the city, Nueva Gorgona is one of Panama City’s best beaches. Bring your own food and beach supplies, then get ready to enjoy the crystal blue waters of this gorgeous beach! Be wary that on weekends, the beach can get rather busy. Surfers also flock to this beach like birds, but if that’s not your crowd, there’s definitely some calmer spots around the beach. Just be sure to arrive early!

Capilla San Jose

See Panama City in a different light when you visit the historic Capilla San Jose. This 16th century Spanish-built church is most famous for its Golden Altar, made completely out of gold. Entrance to this compact, intriguing cathedral is free, but donations are accepted. This is one of the best free things to do in Panama City during downtime.

Parque Omar

Need a break during your stay in Panama City? Relax in the serene Parque Omar for as long as you need to feel rejuvenated again. This urban park offers a tranquil escape away from the city’s bustling atmosphere, but does so without missing out on exciting activities. You’ll see families and individuals having a picnic, playing games, and exercising all throughout the park. There’s also a skate park and playgrounds for even more entertainment!

Multiplaza Pacific

Meet some new people or take pictures at Panama City’s best shopping mall! This huge mall is referred to by some as the best mall in the western hemisphere. Multiplaza Pacific comprises four levels of chain shops, retail stores, designer boutiques, electronics stores, pharmacies, restaurants/cafes, and so much more. Spend a few hours exploring this free thing to do in Panama City, or simply take a short stroll during your leisure time.

Without a doubt, there’s no activity that can beat the benefits of taking a free walking tour in a new city.
