Why you would ever want to leave Portland, well, we're not really sure. We will say, however, that Southern Maine has gorgeous beaches and towns too cute to be skipped. Here are three easy day trips from the good old land of lobster (and they're all under an hour away)!
Kennebunkport
Drive time: 35 minutes
Watch out -- you will, without a doubt, catch yourself exclaiming "how cute!" at every corner. Pretty beaches, handmade ice cream shops, fine restaurants, and riverside seafood stands -- Kennebunkport has it all. Be sure to check out the charming shops in Dock Square, and spend some time relaxing near the calm waters of Gooch's Beach.
Pro-tip: If you're looking for a more vibrant beach experience, stop at Old Orchard Beach, located in-between Portland and Kennebunkport.
Ogunquit
Drive time: 45 minutes
In the language of the Algonquin indigenous people, the name Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea." In Ogunquit, you'll have a hard time deciding what to do first. Stroll in and out of the adorable shops on Main Street, splash in the crystal-clear water of Ogunquit Beach, or indulge in some lobster rolls on Perkins Cove! Whatever you do, make sure you walk Marginal Way. This 1.2 mile path boasts some of Maine's best coastal scenery -- along with views of historic homes and colorful flowers every step of the way.
Portsmouth
Drive time: 53 minutes
Isn't that in New Hampshire? Well, yes, but Maine is right on the other side of the river! Portsmouth, New Hampshire gives off historic Boston vibes (if Boston was a cute coastal town). Picturesque streets lined with brick row houses meet rustic waterfront restaurants serving some of the creamiest New England clam chowder you'll ever have.
