Just a short walk from the beach, the Taha Tai Hotel stands among some of the worlds most amazing mysteries. The hotel features an outdoor swimming pool, and offers bungalows encircled by gardens for your stay. With plenty of common areas outdoors and Hanga Roa's downtown only 1650 feet away, there is plenty of nature and local life to enjoy when not exploring the rest of Easter Island.
Just a 5-minute drive from Mataveri International Airport, the hotel offers free Wi-Fi, free parking, breakfast, and easy access to Anakena Beach alongside its cheery atmosphere. The Hanga Roa Museum is just under two miles away as well.
Day 5. Hanga Roa
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before joining a tour along the winding route leading you through a path marked by dozens of giant Moais statues. The heads of Easter Island are iconic, and you'll be strolling right among them. Continue on all the way to Anakena Beach, where more ancient statues of a bygone era still stand along the shore.
Full Day Excursion through the Moais Route and Anakena Beach
Follow the winding path along Rapa Nui as you make your way through thousands of moais, the giant heads that Easter Island is known for. You can also see one of the best preserved villages on the island, and all of this is on the slopes of the mighty Rano Raraku Volcano Crater. Enjoy picking out the petroglyphs etched into the back of some of the moais, and learn about the ancient people who put all of these otherworldly statues there.
Follow the path along time and legend carved into stone until you make your way to Anakena Beach, where you will see the unique coastal moais facing the water, and long white sand beaches.
Day 6. Hanga Roa
Today you get to see the Moais statues again, this time on the slopes of the giant Rano Karaku Volcano crater. See the abandoned villages, some excavated to see how these mysterious people lived, as you continue on to the Orongo Ceremonial Center for a taste of the culture.
Next is a tour among the only statues on the island that face the ocean. They are the Ahu Akivi, and among them are other statues that stand out with little differences from the giant volcanic stone heads we associate with the island.
Rano Raraku Volcano and Orongo Ceremonial Center Tour
Explore the amazing Rano Raraku Crater today, dotted with ancient villages and massive stone moais, which have sunk into the earth up to their chins, giving them the reputation of being the heads of Easter Island. Visit beautiful temples like Ahu Vaihu, which is a well-worked stone platform with 8 moais nearby, and a scattering of pukaos, or stone topknots carved for other moais heads. You can also find Ahu Akahanga here, with even more platforms and statues, but the gem here is Orongo, located right at the edge of the crater.
Walk among the mystery of this ancient ceremonial center where birds have been drawn along the walls in beautiful stylized detail in honor of the once annual birdman competition, an ancient practice that would appoint a spiritual and political leader for the island
Continue on to the Vinapu sector, where large basalt slabs rest in an archaeological site, and Rano Kau, a lake with a small island of reed and lush greenery. Micro fauna calls this beautiful place home. Be ready with your camera, all of your stops on this tour are memories and scenes you will never want to forget.
Ahu Akivi Tour
Unlike the massive Moais statues dotting the island, the Ahu Akivi statues are the only ones to face the ocean, and some also have the addition of stone topknots placed upon their heads.
Learn about the history and theories of these unqiue and interesting sculptures as you make your way toward Puna Pau, a small but important scoria crater where the stone topknots were made.
Continue on to Ahu Uri Aurenga, a single statue placed preciously along the orientation line of the winter solstice. Discover more about the ancient people and their culture as you move about the island.
