What to Expect at Your First Hawaiian Luau

By Bridget Castner

Have you ever wanted to go to an authentic luau in Hawaii, but don't really know what to expect? If so, read on to learn what happens at a luau and some tips on attending one!

Receiving a Lei

The lei is a symbol of friendship given upon arrival that bonds you with your host and other guests. Make sure to keep your lei on throughout the party, as it's considered to be a rude gesture if you don't wear it. They are made from the fresh local flowers in Hawaii, kukui nuts, and sometimes even sea shells. Legend has it there is a Hawaiian goddess who haunts guests who don’t wear their leis, so be sure to stay on her good side!

Traditional Hawaiian Food

One of the biggest parts of a luau is the food. You'll find dishes like Chicken Long Rice and Kalua Pig, the centerpiece of luaus. The pig is roasted in an imu (underground oven) and is especially tender and salty. Another luau food is Molokai Sweet Potatoes, a delicious side dish that can be either baked or roasted. Squid Luau is another popular dish served, which are made with fresh luau leaves simmered with squid, coconut milk, and sea salt. These are only a few of the delicious Hawaiian foods that will be served at a luau, as there are many more including sweet bread rolls and desserts like Kulolo and Haupia.

Entertainment

Since attending a luau is one of the best things to do in Hawaii, it's no surprise they're filled with unique entertainment. At many luaus, guests are encouraged to take part in lei-making sessions, ukulele lessons, or hula dancing. Hula dancing is always part of the show, as is a thrilling Polynesian fire-knife dancing show. This gives guests much excitement while watching the performers move to the beat of pounding drums while dancing with flame-engulfed blades.

What to Wear

Luaus are a casual affair, and the most important thing is to be comfortable and have fun while you're at one! Attire can be just a simple t-shirt with shorts and flip flops, or if you're feeling really into the luau spirit, opt for a traditional Hawaiian shirt or flower printed sundress.

Seating at a Luau

At most traditional luaus, guests sit on the ground on large mats. These mats are decorated with centerpieces made of ti leaves, fancy fern fronds, and flowers. The total duration of a luau is usually about 3 hours, so make sure you'll be comfortable sitting on the ground on and off between grabbing food and dancing. However, some luaus also offer a community table to sit, mingle, and eat at as well.

Drinks

Mai Tai is the main and most popular drink at a Hawaiian luau. It is made with rum, triple sec, orange juice, orgeat syrup, and garnished with a tropical fruit slice like pineapple or orange. A Blue Hawaiian is also a very common drink at a luau, as well a Lava Flow. This rum-based cocktail is blended with bananas, strawberries, pineapple juice, and coconut milk, creating a red-and-white swirl that's as aesthetically pleasing as it is tasty!

Now that you know what to expect, are you ready to experience your first Hawaiian luau? Book a trip and make sure to add one onto your Hawaii vacation itinerary!
