Get to Know Ushuaia, Argentina!

By Caitlin Hornik

Often referred to as the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia is an incredible destination for adventure-seekers. Nestled between the Andean Mountains and the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia has something for everyone.

The End of the World

Known as “el Fin del Mundo,” Ushuaia is a hidden gem in the world. In recent years, it has become more of a tourist destination and hub for travelers. It has expanded its offerings to now include more modern and luxurious hotels, casinos, and dining options. What remains the same is its culture, singularity, and natural beauty.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

Set in the Andean Mountains, this national park spans over 155,676 acres. Despite its size, only a small part of the vast park is open to the public for exploration. The rest remains inaccessible due to its jagged and dense landscape. Still, the park has stunning views and immense natural beauty due to its location. It is definitely worth visiting, even if you’re only in Ushuaia for a day.

Gateway to Antarctica

Ushuaia is a port city for many Antarctic cruises. Generally, it’s the last port before Antarctica when departing from Buenos Aires, or the first port after Antarctica if coming from Chile. In some cases, it is the embarkation port. The recent increase in the number of cruise ships sailing to Antarctica has helped put Ushuaia on the map as a desirable vacation destination.

Beagle Channel

This body of water forms part of the Chile-Argentina border in the east, while separating the Tierra del Fuego archipelago from other smaller islands in the south. The Beagle Channel is a great gateway to exploring penguins, seals, and other wildlife. It also presents the opportunity to discover the rich history of this area, including the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse.

Food and Culture

Being surrounded by water, one can imagine the kinds of fresh seafood this area has to offer. Ushuaia is known for its king crab, mussels, and sea bass. Lamb is also a popular dish in the area. For dessert, try a hot chocolate or a dish served with dulce de leche sauce. Both are customary in this part of the world, and well worth the calories! Some of the best restaurants in the area include Maria Lola, Kalma, and Bodegón Fueguino.
