Wander through the Kylemore Abbey

The Kylemore Abbey stands as one of the most historically significant landmarks in the county of Galway. Founded as a Benedictine Monastery, the abbey sits on the grounds of the Kylemore Castle, which served as the royal home of honorable individuals including the Duke and Dutchess of Manchester.

Tours of the Kylemore Abbey can give visitors an in-depth understanding of the monastery’s beginnings, spiritual mission, and ties to Irish heritage. Unwind by the beautifully manicured Victorian Walled Gardens, discover the Neo-Gothic Church, or simply walk through the castle to experience a brief step back in time.

Discover ancient artifacts at Galway City Museum

If you’re interested in learning more about Galway’s history, a visit to the Galway City Museum is a great place to start. Built in 1976, this institution started off as the home of Irish artist Clare Sheridan who owned a sizable collection of medieval rocks. Over the years, the museum’s artifacts expanded to include military items, historical photographs, paintings, and even books.

The best part about this in-person history lesson is that it’s totally free. That’s right, visitors can explore this museum free of charge between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Visit the Aran Islands

Just a short ferry ride from the city of Galway are the famous Aran Islands. The three islands – Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer – rest within Galway Bay and have become popular tourist attractions due to their use of the traditional Irish (Gaelic language), ancient landmarks, and abundance of unusual and unique wildlife.

Visitors will be amazed by the Blue Flag golden beaches, the historic limestone structures (including the Dun Aonghasa), and the evolving culinary scene.

Hike the iconic Diamond Hill

While Galway has a beautiful coast, the county is also known for its gorgeous rolling hills. One in particular that is perfect for hikes is the iconic Diamond Hill, located within the Connemara National Park.

Adventurous folks can choose to walk through the Upper Trail or Lower Trail – both differ in length and time. Once visitors make it to the end of their trek, they will be rewarded with postcard-worthy views of the Connermara countryside and the surrounding islands.

Eat Oysters in Galway City

For people who enjoy fresh seafood, a visit to Galway's coastal city is a no-brainer – especially if you enjoy oysters. Galway has become renowned for its abundance of this delicious shellfish and hosts the Galway International Oyster Festival annually to showcase this particular dish.

A few of the locally sourced oysters that can be found on this side of Ireland include the DK Connermara, Kelly Oysters, and the Galway Flat Oyster!

Explore the Latin Quarter

Although Galway is rich in medieval history, the Latin Quarter serves as the city’s most modern and vibrant neighborhood. The cobblestone streets and stone buildings add to the unique flair and culture of the city.

Filled with tons of restaurants, upscale shops, and boutiques, there is no shortage of fun things to do in Galway. Visitors can start their day off with breakfast at one of the many cafes and end their nights with cocktails and live music at the pub.

Experience the Dun Aonghasa

Perhaps one of the most fascinating landmarks on The Aran Islands has to be the Dun Aonghasa. This archeological site is an ancient stone fort perched dramatically on the edge of Inis Mór's towering cliffs.

Step back in time as you explore this iconic archaeological site, believed to date back over 3,000 years. Marvel at the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean while standing within its semi-circular walls, a testament to Ireland's rich history and enduring spirit.
