By Dana Perkiss

Nicknamed “the Lake County” for its 365 lakes to visit, Cavan is an often-overlooked yet must-visit destination in Ireland. From scenic parks to luxurious castles and historical landmarks, there’s something for everyone here. Gain inspiration for your next trip to Ireland by checking out these top things to do in Cavan!

Cavan Burren Park

This prehistoric landscape features over six miles of trails perfect for walking and soaking up the views. Visitors can wander around this Geopark’s five trails, learn more at the Visitor Centre, and explore the nearby Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark – an extremely unique UNESCO landmark that sits right on the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Though the park only officially opened to the public in 2014, its history likely goes back over 340 million years. This makes Cavan Burren Park a must on any Ireland vacation itinerary!

Cabra Castle

The Cabra Castle is a spectacular 18th-century castle that rests on 1,000 beautiful acres of gardens and greenlands, and it’s even a 4-star luxury hotel if you want to stay over! You can treat yourself to afternoon tea, stroll around the manicured gardens, and then visit the next-door Dún a Rí Forest Park.

Dún a Rí Forest Park

Covering 565 acres, this hidden gem in Ireland is perfect for explorers, nature lovers, and couples seeking some romance. The Romantic Glen area is packed with history and legends, while a diverse array of wildlife and flora/fauna can be seen throughout. Wander around any (or all) of the four walking trails to marvel at unique sights like Toba na Splinne Holy Well and the ruins of Fleming's Castle.

Cloughoughter Castle

The fairytale-like Cloughoughter Castle rests upon a small island in Lough Oughter that can only be accessed by kayak, boat, or canoe. There are tours you can take to the castle, but admiring it from afar is also a great thing to do in Cavan. You can find the Cloughoughter Castle just 2.5 miles east of Killeshandra town in County Cavan.

The Cavan Way

If you’re interested in a scenic walk in Ireland, then make your way to The Cavan Way! This gentle, long-distance trail goes about 14 miles beginning in Blacklion and ending in Dowra. It can typically be completed in one day. You’ll see tons of beautiful sights as the trail leads you past the Cavan Burren, the Giant’s Grave, and more fascinating locations.

Cavan County Museum

As the name suggests, the Cavan County Museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of County Cavan. One of the main attractions of the museum is found outside, being the award-winning WWI Trench Experience. The museum features other World War I experiences, as well as tons of diverse exhibitions dedicated to Ireland’s famine, the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), and more.
