By Rachael Funk

Renowned for its exquisite seafood, gorgeous beaches, and historic landmarks, it's easy to get swept up with all the amazing things to do in Portugal. To help narrow it down, here are some of the best places to visit in Portugal!

Jeronimos Monastery

Built by King Manuel I in 1502, Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most impressive sites in Portugal. Its unique Manueline architecture (named after the king) reflects the wealth during the Age of Discovery, and it’s here where Vasco de Gama is buried. While entrance to the church is free, you will want to pay for admission to the cloisters, considered among the most beautiful in the world. Also on site is the National Museum of Archaeology.

Sao Jorge Castle

For the best views over Lisbon, head to the imposing Sao Jorge Castle. Dating back to the 11th century, the castle become a royal palace in the 12th century but fell into ruins after the king moved. Surrounded by a peaceful park, the castle offers superb views of the old city, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge.

Alfama

The Alfama district is Lisbon’s oldest area dating back to over 1,000 years old when it was ruled by the Moors. Located between Sao Jorge Castle and the Tagus river, its Moorish flair can still be seen in its tangled lanes and pastel-hued buildings. Hop on a tram or cozy up in a tavern to experience this atmospheric, working class neighborhood.

Belem Tower

This medieval defense tower is one of Lisbon’s many waterfront landmarks. Built by King Manuel, the tower protected Lisbon’s harbor and features an ornate design similar to that of Jeronimos Monastery. It was the last sight sailors saw before embarking on their voyages to discover new worlds, and the first when they returned.

Rossio Square

Rossio Square is the heart of Lisbon where locals and visitors come to stroll or stop for a drink at one of the many outdoor cafes. In the 19th century, the square was paved with cobblestones in wave patterns, making it one of the most Instagram worthy places in the city.

Braga

A city nestled near Porto and Amarante, this is a gorgeous getaway for those who love architecture and history. Home to the oldest cathedral in the country, Santa Maria de Braga, this place is the third-largest city in Portugal and an absolute joy to explore. You can look forward to an unhurried pace, a young and vibrant population, and plenty of opportunities to snap the perfect photo.

Pena Palace

Located in Sintra, Pena palace is so bright and intricately detailed, a visit feels surreal. It’s easy to see why this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a bucket-list item for so many visitors to the country with its eye-popping color and bold designs. An added bonus of a visit to this stunning palace is the panoramic view over Sintra from the top!

Capela dos Ossos

A very exciting stop for lovers of the macabre, Portugal’s Chapel of Bones is located in Evora and part of the larger Royal Church of St. Francis. The chapel was built by monks in the 16th century with a message hung on the door which read, “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos,” or, “we bones are here, waiting for yours.” They thought this would help provide the town with a place to meditate on the impermanence of life and material things and the irrefutable presence of death.

Biblioteca Joanina

Coimbra University’s opulent 18th-century library is a must-see for bibliophiles, art lovers, and anyone who appreciates a nice stroll through a Baroque wonderland. The library holds tens of thousands of volumes and is magnificently decorated. It is a national monument and is one of two libraries in the world whose books are protected from insects by the presence of a colony of bats within the library.
