Souvenirs You Must Buy in Germany

By Jessica Russo

The hardest part of vacation is going home. You pack up, trudge to the airport, and begin to miss your new favorite place before you even leave.

We get it - coming home from an incredible vacation is hard, but it's a lot easier when you have awesome souvenirs to remind you of your journey. Sure, t-shirts and magnets are nice, but why not buy something you can only find in Germany? Here are some cool ideas for souvenirs that'll make you feel like you're right back in Bavaria.

Beer Steins

Prost! If you're like us, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Germany is a nice cold pilsner. What better way to bring the unbeatable beer culture of Germany home with you than your very own beer stein!? And hey, if you drink enough, you may even see your biceps get bigger.

A Bit of the Berlin Wall

Hold a piece of history in your hand! This souvenir will be a literal concrete reminder of your trip to Germany. Once a symbol of oppression, the Berlin Wall has become a sought-after souvenir.

Tip: Many tourist shops are guilty of selling inauthentic, imitation pieces of the "Berlin Wall," so be careful and do your research before buying!.

A Cuckoo Clock

After having the time of your life in Germany, why not bring home a classic piece of the country's artistic and architectural legacy? Cuckoo clocks make the perfect gift or a quirky-cute piece of home decor. Every clock is unique, so find the one that makes your heart go "cuckoo."

Fairy Tale Books

Pick up one of the most widely distributed books in German history! While venturing through Germany, get your hands on a copy of the Brothers Grimm's famous classic, Children's and Household Tales, otherwise known as "Grimm's Fairy Tales." Today, there are tons of different cover options available and translations exist in over 160 languages! There's no such thing as being too old for fairy tales.

Christmas Decorations

Even if you visit Germany in the middle of summer, you should buy yourself an early Christmas gift - an ornament! Did you know Christmas ornaments trace their roots back to Germany? Whether you go with a beautiful blown blass ball or an intricate wooden carving, German Christmas ornaments are sure to stand out on your beloved tree. Plus, you'll be able to reminisce (and show off to your friends) come Christmastime!

Tip: Check out the German Christmas Museum in Rothenburg ob der Tauber for historic holiday exhibits - and an incredible giftshop.

Hummell Figurines

Equally creepy and cute, these traditional figurines were first introduced in 1935 and became popular at the end of World War II. In fact, many US soldiers stationed in Germany sent them home as gifts! Today, Hummel figurines are found in countless German and German-American homes. Find one you love and begin your own classic collection!

Curry Ketchup

After snacking on Berlin's famous currywursts, there's a good chance you'll never want to pair anything with regular old ketchup again. To help you with this struggle, treat yourself to a few bottles of German curry ketchup! Rich with clovey, turmeric-laden sweetness, curry ketchup goes with just about everything - from fries, to scrambled eggs, to hot dogs and burgers. Bring a little bit of Germany right into your kitchen; you can thank us later.
