Fun Ideas for a Spontaneous Trip

By Soren Rivero

Sure, planning a vacation in advance is a great thing to do – it gives you plenty of time to choose the right destination, save extra money, and make an itinerary.

While planning can be fantastic, sometimes you need a break away without having to wait half a year. If this sounds like you, here are some fun ideas for a spontaneous trip or weekend getaway!

Beach Weekend in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches in the Western hemisphere, given that it’s a Caribbean island off the North Atlantic Ocean coast. Here, you’ll see dozens of beaches filled with white sand, bright blue water, and outstandingly vibrant palm trees. Some of the best beaches include Playa Crash Boat, Playa Sucia, and Isla Verde. There are also mountains and waterfalls scattered across this beautiful island – take some time to explore!

See a Broadway Show in New York City

If you’re a fan of bright lights, heart-warming stories, and Broadway performances, New York City is your place.

Visitors can return to the magical theaters and watch classics such as Aladdin, Wicked, Mean Girls, and The Phantom of the Opera. After enjoying a Broadway show, you can enjoy the surplus of other things to do in New York like strolling around Central Park, feasting through food halls, or seeing the iconic Statue of Liberty.

Relax in Cape Cod

Boasting 15 diverse towns and over 40 miles of beautiful beaches, Cape Cod is the perfect weekend getaway for those looking to relax. You can explore the gorgeous Cape Cod National Seashore for your favorite sunny spot, go hiking at the Cape Cod Rail Trail, or even have a once-in-a-lifetime whale-watching experience! There's also Provincetown, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyards... the list of things to do in Cape Cod is endless!

Go Skiing in Canada

One of the many reasons why people take spontaneous trips is to get away from the mundane of everyday life, and nothing says “no matter how hard you fall, you can always get back up” more than skiing atop piles of cushioned white snow! For this activity, you’ll for sure want to visit Canada.

Canada is filled with ski resorts, one of the most famous being Whistler Blackcomb Resort in Vancouver. This is the largest ski resort in North America, with over 8,000 acres of skiable terrain. The resort is also family-friendly, full of amenities, and only a few miles away from the heart of Vancouver.

Explore Washington D.C.

The vibrant U.S. capital is simply bursting with things to do and sights to see – from iconic federal buildings to historic museums and art venues, there's something for everyone in Washington D.C. Even better, most of the things to do in D.C. are actually free. The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Lincoln Memorial... all free! What an incredibly easy, spontaneous vacation that won't break the bank!

Hike in Austin, Texas

Texas is one of the more diverse states in the U.S, particularly its terrain and landscapes. There are dozens of high mountains such as the famous Guadalupe Peak towards the far western reach of Texas. Towards the east, you'll get more views of the plentiful beaches such as Galveston and Surfside. The real eyecatcher are the numerous hills in the state's capital, Austin. These hills are superb for those who like hiking or spending time outdoors. While you're there, you can visit some of the museums to learn about Texas history!

Visit the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is the pride and joy of the U.S. It's incredibly popular because of its unique charm and expansive territory, filled with incredible hiking trails and scenic outlooks. A trip here is not only rewarding physically (you'll definitely get those steps in), but also mentally and spiritually.

Learn Some History at a UNESCO World Heritage Site

There is so much in the world to discover and learn about. Sometimes, all we need to take our mind off things is to learn about the history of our planet, or the cultures that inhabit it.

Luckily, there are thousands of UNESCO World Heritage Sites open to the public where people can learn about ancient cultures, their history, or even see some of the world’s most bizarre natural wonders. Some of best are Machu Picchu in Peru, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, and Stonehenge in England (though trips to those may require more planning).

With vacation packages that include air, hotels, and more, taking a spontaneous trip is easier than ever!
