Canyons to Casinos: Making the Most of Your Trip

By Caitlin Hornik

Dreaming of seeing the spectacular sights of the Grand Canyon and spinning the casino wheels in Las Vegas? Why not combine the two into one killer trip?!

The Grand Canyon is only a 4 or 5-hour drive from Vegas, making it easy to combine the sights and sounds of one of nature’s most well-known attractions with the hustle and bustle of one of the most iconic cities in America. Here are some tips to make the most of your cross-over trip!

1. Pack appropriately – but don’t overpack

This goes without saying for any trip, but is specifically true when dealing with two completely different environments! Choose to dress up in Vegas with statement jewelry and accessories. At the Grand Canyon, you’ll want to opt for clothes that allow you to move comfortably if you choose to hike and explore. Now, there is definitely room for overlap here. Certain wardrobe staples, like a tunic and leggings, can work in both locations depending on how you wear them! Keep this in mind when packing, especially if your trip is only 4 or 5 nights.

2. Keep your camera charged

Be sure to have a spare charger with you at all times. The sights of Vegas are so unique and photo-worthy, and the same goes for the Grand Canyon! Having a spare charger on hand will help alleviate some of the anxiety you might feel when traveling between destinations.

3. Plan a flexible itinerary

The beauty of Las Vegas is in its ability to be whimsical. From shopping along the strip to strolling into various hotels and casinos, you definitely want to be able to go with the flow and enjoy sightseeing in a place like Vegas! Having a few structured elements, like dining reservations and show tickets, will ensure that you get a taste of everything the city has to offer. The same goes for your time at the Grand Canyon. Plan to wake up early to catch a sunrise one day, plan for a specific hike another day, and go wherever the wind blows you in between!

4. Balance is key

Be sure to take full advantage of the contrast between the two destinations! Vegas is a fast-paced place whereas the Grand Canyon is much more laid back and easy-going. Enjoy these differences and be sure to savor the energetic highs and lows of both places. Going from the bright lights of Vegas to the natural beauty of the Grand Canyon will shock your senses in the best way!

5. Be present

Easier said than done, but you truly won’t want to miss a single moment in either destination. Do your best to experience these places with your own eyes--not through your phone's camera. Soak up the sights, breathe in the fresh air, and savor every moment of your trip!
