24 Hours in Athens

By Briana Seftel

Explore Europe's oldest city in one perfect day! From fresh bread for breakfast to an evening under the stars, there is plenty to love in Greece's capital, Athens.

Morning

Start the day off right.

Follow the smell of freshly baked bread to Takis Bakery near the Acropolis. Opened since the 1970s, the bakery has been family-run for three generations and produces more than 50 varieties of Greek pastries and bread. Try their special Thessaloniki rolls or Koulouris (a kind of Greek pretzel).

Mid-morning

Get schooled in Ancient Greek history.

The futuristic-looking Acropolis Museum focuses on the extraordinary works of art from the greatest architectural complex in the world. Providing visitors with a comprehensive vision of the Acropolis, the museum also has stunning panoramic views of the Athens.

Early afternoon

Art for your feet.

If you're looking for a practical souvenir made in Greece, look no further than Melissinos. Since 1920, the Melissinos family has been making custom leather sandals for everyone from Jackie Kennedy Onassis to John Lennon. Hailed the "Poet Sandal Maker of Athens," Melissinos will customize any sandal to fit your feet like a glove.

Late afternoon

To market!

Get to know the heart of the city at Athens' central covered market, Varvakios Agora. Athenians come here to shop for fresh pressed olive oil, lamb, feta cheese, and fragrant oregano. The market is a sensory and visual delight for all who visit, even if you leave empty handed.

Early evening

Dine with the locals.

In the heart of charming Plaka, Psarras has been serving authentic Greek cuisine to locals and tourists since 1898. Take a seat under mulberry trees and feast on traditional Greek dishes like grilled octopus, moussaka, and lamb baked in a clay pot.

Night

A film under the stars.

In the Thissio neighborhood near the Ancient Agora is one of the oldest outdoor cinemas in Athens, Cine Thission. From the months of May to September, catch a film in a beautiful garden setting with stunning views of the illuminated Acropolis. Screenings specialize in classic and contemporary films in English - Hitchcock is a favorite.
